John Carroll

  John Carroll was born in Baltimorein 1735. He studied in the college for english catholic of St Omer when he was ten, to run away from protestantism. At the age of 18, he became a Jesuit, he studied philosophy and theology in Liege.

  Also following him in St. Omer was his cousin Charles Carroll, who was to become the only Catholic signatory of the Declaration of Independence (1776), and the first United States Senator from Maryland.   

  John Carroll stayed in Europe until he was almost 40, when Pope Clement XIV suppressed the Society of Jesus in 1773, Carroll returned to Maryland. In 1774, J.Carroll founded St. John the Evangelist Parish. He was the first bishop nominated by the Pope.

Daniel Carroll

  He was born in 1730, the family exiled to escaped form the religion war and the increase of Protestantism and  for their catholic education the Carroll brother’s went abroad and Europe. From his 12 years to old to his 18 he came to St-Omer to studied under the Jesuits.

 

  After a tour of Europe Daniel Carroll came back to America and was elected in 1781 mayor of Washington.He also entered in the political arena in 1781 because he was elected to the Continental congress.        

            

  In 1789 Carroll had a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. In 1791 George Washington named Daniel Carroll as one of the three commissioners to survey and define the District of Columbia; indeed Carroll owned much land. He resigned because of an illness 4 years later, and the next year at the age of 65 he died at home near Rock Creek in Forest Glen. He was buried in St. John's Catholic Cemetery.

Charles Carroll

  He was born on the 19thof September 1737 in Annapolis, Maryland. He came from a prominent family. He was the first citizen of the American colonies. He began to study at Jesuit colleges in Maryland and in France at 17 years old at the Jesuit College of St-Omer to have a catholic education that he couldn’t have in America. Then, he studied in Paris and London. When he returned to the United States, he could speak 5 languages. Charles had a plantation of tobacco in the Maryland that made him  rich.

  When Great Britain was in conflict with her American colonies, he became one of the most important voices for  America's Independence. Firstly he criticized this regime by writing anonymous letters, finally he decided to write political articles in the Maryland Gazette, with the name of “First Citizen”.

  He was famous for his position about revolution. For him, to be respected and listened by the Britain crown, America had to use violence and the bayonet.

  Charles Carroll was elected to the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776, and remained a delegate until 1778. He was too late to vote in favor of the Declaration of Independence, but was present to sign the official document that survives today. He’s the only catholic who signed the declaration. He died on the 14thof November 1832.
